Description

Hand made Medicine Bag by Sylvia Jackson & other members of the Navajo Nation (Din’eh), USA. This is a group of Navajo women, helped by their children to make deerskin medicine bags, bone & bead necklaces and feather fans. Height of actual bag part (i.e. the bit you put your items into) is about 5cm (2 inches). Total length of leather cord for hanging around neck is about 28 inches (70cms) but this length is adjustable by moving the knot. The leather is lovely and soft and the finish is excellent. The little wolf on the bag is made of wood and tied onto the leather on the flap. Please help these people become self sufficient and to receive directly a fair price for their work.

A medicine bag is a pouch traditionally worn around the neck by Native Americans. The bag is used to carry “medicine”, such as small crystals, rocks, herbs or other items.

They most often held things such as animal furs, special stones, or anything that meant something to the owner. No person, apart from the owner, was allowed to look inside this bag. When the owner died, they were buried with it.
