Silver Horse Necklace and Earrings. Horse is about 1 cm tall. Horse’s body is approximately 2 cm across. Made by Navajo on reservation in USA. The chain part of the necklace is made from liquid silver (ie tiny silver tubes) and the tiny beads are made from reconstituted turquoise. Central turquoise bead measures approx. 0.6 cm diameter. Feathers approx. 1.5 cm. Entire design is about 4 cm from top to bottom. Horse is hollow.
The horse is a universal symbol of freedom without restraint, because riding a horse made people feel they could free themselves from their own bindings. Also linked with riding horses, they are symbols of travel, movement, and desire.
The horse also represents power in Native American tribes. Native American tribes that possessed horses often won more battles than those who did not. They also had more territory. The number of horses a tribe possessed was telling of how wealthy they were. Within these cultures and others, the horse is often an emblem of war.
Native American Indians were a deeply spiritual people and they communicated their history, thoughts, ideas and dreams from generation to generation through Symbols and Signs such as the Horse symbol. The meaning of the horse symbol was to signify mobility, stamina, strength and power. It was so revered by some tribes that the horse also represented loyalty, love and devotion. The horse symbol was also a sign of mutual respect.
Given that horses were the main form of transportation for many Native American tribes, their presence in symbolism is prevalent. The symbol of a horse worn on jewelry or other attire represented strength, freedom, and nobility for the wearer.
