The Zuni are Native Americans of western New Mexico. They are one of a group of tribes known as Pueblo Indians. Zuni Fetishes are small carvings made from various materials such as bone, shells, and gemstones by the Zuni people.

“Heartline symbolized the life force of the animal. The line from the mouth to the heart signifies the “breath of life.” It is used by many Native American Indian tribes and usually has meanings related to past spirits and ancestors. The heartline may also indicate that the Native American warrior’s heart is strong like the bear. The Heartline is a symbol of what you’ve learned from the world that you’ve taken into your heart because that is what you are able to give back to the world.” – Ray Tracey, Navajo. Many of the fetish carvings have a heartline in the shape of an arrow to represent the early petrification, by the founding twins, of that actual animal, to illustrate that it is a living, breathing image.

<p These wonderful bear necklaces are not made by the Navajo but are inspired by the Native American lores and legends.

  • Regularly featured in mythology, the bear is largely a solitary animal.
  • In terms of Native American belief, the bear is a symbol of ‘going within’ and the sweetness of life.
