Description

Orange Flowers Digestive & Mental Health. Used in the cosmetics industry for soaps, face creams, lotions and toners where astringency is required.

Latin Name: Citrus sinensis syn. Citrus aurantium sinensis. Plant Family: Rutaceae(Rue). Sweet Orange. The sweet orange tree is a tender evergreen tree, native to southern China, which can now be found growing in southern Europe, the Mediterranean, north-eastern India and some parts of the United States such as California. It can reach a height of 7-15 metres, unlike its cousin the bitter orange (C. aurantium) you won’t find sweet oranges growing in the wild, only in cultivated areas.

Orange flower water is used in middle-eastern cuisine used mostly for making sweet dishes and confections. Orange flower water is used in the perfume industry where an orange top note is required; The fresh flowers are candied and eaten as sweets in France; and a delicious fruity, floral honey is made if beehives are left solely in orange groves. Dried flowers can be made into tea or added to potpourri and as a component of environmentally friendly confetti and bath soaks.

Just its scent is pleasant enough to exert stress-reduction effects, but its therapeutic benefits go much further than that and can be attributed to the biological changes that its chemistry triggers in the body. Both the bitter (wild) orange and sweet orange have the same properties.

To brew the tea, boil some petals in hot water. Don´t use too much of this as it has a strong taste. I use just under 1 teaspoon per person. When the blossom re hydrates it expands in size. Once brewed you will need to sweeten the tea. The best option is Orange Blossom Honey. This enhances the orangey taste even more. A divine combination with the natural infusion. This tea is lightly hypnotic and calming. It´s known to be good for digestion and has anti-spasmodic action for the muscles. The blossom can be used to help with anxiety, sleeplessness and digestive problems too.

This drink is not recommended if you are pregnant, or taking sedentary medication. Also if you are allergic to citrus fruits. Always thoroughly research any new herb you are considering using and if taking prescribed drugs, have a chat to your GP first.

Orange Blossom Water is a flower water (like rosewater) that’s made from the blossoms on orange trees. It’s a wonderfully floral, citrus flavor to add to baked goods, salads, and drinks. The key to using any flower water is to not overdo it. Orange blossom water adds a lovely flavor to a dish, but it is deceptively strong. To keep your dish from being overly floral and cloying, use a small amount of orange blossom water and taste as you add it to make sure it’s not overpowering the dish. An easy way to make this is: for every half a liter of mineral water, you’ll need 50 grams (1.7 ounces) of dried orange blossom flowers. place the flowers in a bowl and cover them with the water. Stir them a little and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or cling film so that the water is permeated with the floral aroma from the flowers. You should leave it for a day in a cool, dark place. After 24 hours, strain the water using a cloth strainer or place gauze or a cotton cloth in a sieve. Leave it to stand for 30 minutes to an hour and pour it into glass jars or bottles. It is advisable to keep orange blossom water in pre-sterilised dark glass containers to prevent light from entering so it keeps better. Close the jar or bottle and store it in the refrigerator. You can use this water as a facial toner, as the blossom contains moisturizing properties for the skin. You can use this recipe to make rose petal water as well.
