Magnet Fairy with Unicorn

Lisa Parker designed fridge magnets of a Gothic fairy and unicorn. Approximately 8cm by 5.5cm.

The wonderful Unicorn. The myths refer to a beast with one horn that can only be tamed by a virgin; In one of his notebooks Leonardo da Vinci wrote: The unicorn, through its intemperance and not knowing how to control itself, for the love it bears to fair maidens forgets its ferocity and wildness; and laying aside all fear it will go up to a seated damsel and go to sleep in her lap, and thus the hunters take it. In the encyclopedias its horn was said to have the power to render poisoned water potable and to heal sickness.

To test the authenticity of a unicorns horn the following was believed true:

• The true horn, when thrown into water sends up little bubbles. The water seems to boil though cold, and one can hear the boiling.
• The true horn gives out a sweet odour when burnt
• The true horn sweats in the presence of poison
• Enclose a spider in a circle drawn on the floor with an alicon. If the horn is true the spider will not be able to cross outside the circle, and it will starve to death.

There is a story that when all the animals of the earth were boarding the Ark, the unicorns were so busy playing to join the others. Is this the reason there are no more unicorns on the earth…..Or are there?
