As part of the Lakota culture, when people pray or do anything sacred, they see the world as having Four Directions. From these Four Directions — west, north, east, south — come the four winds. The special meanings of each of the Four Directions are accompanied by specific colors, and the shape of the cross symbolizes all directions. Like many Native American beliefs and traditions, specific details regarding colors associated with directions varies.
Smudging information is included. The ritual of sage smudging and purification is intention-based. One does not have to perform the process exactly. In fact, different Native American cultures may vary the process from tribe to tribe. Know that if your heart is pure, the effort and intention will be enough.
Sweetgrass is a plant that comes from the US and Canada. It’s a form of tall grass that is mostly green, with red at its base. Sweetgrass is traditionally plaited into long braids. When burnt as incense, sweetgrass – as the name suggests – has a sweet fragrance. Juniper bushes typically grow in the Northern Hemisphere. Juniper leaves are commonly collected and burnt as a form of incense. Sage is one of the most important Native American ceremonial plants, used by many tribes as an incense and purifying herb. Sage is burned as a spiritual cleanser before many traditional ceremonies, and is also one of the herbs frequently included in medicine bundles and amulets.
Traditionally, when gathering herbs for ceremonial use, care is taken to determine the time of day, month, or year when the herbs should be collected; for example, at dawn or evening, at certain phases of the moon, or according to yearly cycles. Gertrude Allen, a Lumbee, reported that her father, an expert in healing with plants, stated that sage varies in potency at different times of the year.
